in

Holocaust and Human Rights Education

Charlotte NC
July 15-21, 2018

Schedule of Events

Five Days of Powerful Learning
July 15-21, 2018

Beginning on Sunday evening with an informal gathering at Providence Road Sundries near the Queens University you will be immersed in a professional development experience like none you have ever had before.

Monday we begin at the Stan Greenspon Center for Peace and Social Justice at Queens University with an introduction to the seminar quickly followed by a dive into the TED talk that inspired our theme: "The Danger of a Single Story". We will also explore the Holocaust through the eyes of many different survivors using the iWitness online platform. Rob Hadley will help us set up accounts and learn to navigate the site.

Tuesday brings us again to the Greenspon Center where we will examine the roots of anti-Semitism and how we can begin to address it today. We will also begin to work with the UN Declaration on Human Rights in new and creative ways. We will travel to Tonya's home to enjoy a dinner and a presentation on Jewish music led by Cantor Mary from Temple Beth El.

Wednesday we return to the Greenspon Center to learn about Jewish life in Eastern Europe before World War II. We will come face to face with the vibrant and life affirming culture that often gets eclipsed by the tragedy of the Holocaust.

Thursday takes us into the heart of Charlotte for a visit to the Harvey Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture for an afternoon of cultural exploration closer to home. We will also hear from Mrs. Jacki Lynn Baynks as she shares her experiences raising a black son in today's America.

Friday we spend the day on the campus of Shalom Park learning about local resources available to you and your students. We will enjoy a shabbat meal and attend services at Temple Beth El.

Saturday we will meet for a final time at UNCC for a closing celebration of our time together.
